Almeida, faced with the need to modernise its obsolete medieval structures, dedicated itself after the Restoration (1641) to the construction of a renewed war machine that could adapt to the new firearms (artillery) and enable it to seal the border. The fortress square is hexagonal in plan, made up of six bastions, to which correspond the same number of ravelins. The town within the walls preserves a significant number of military buildings, as well as a civil architecture of great interest.
